Two victories in first two matches over Konjuh and Kanepi were not surprising at all. But in the third round Canadian player managed to beat Naomi Osaka (5:7, 7:6, 6:4) and made everyone respect her.
A victory over the two-time US Open champion gained Fernandez' self-confidence. After that she recorded three difficult victories over Kerber (4:6, 7:6, 6:2), Svitolina (6:3, 3:6, 7:6) and Sabalenka (7:6, 4:6, 6:4). In the match against Sabalenka Canadian player was losing with a 1:4 score, but managed to come back and won the first set on a tiebreak. In the tenth game of the third set Belarusian player didn't win a single point at her serve and gave away a spot in the final.
